Stone Church Arts presents an evening of new music for cello and guitar featuring Eugene Friesen with Ian Ethan Case. The evening will include solos and duets plus new collaborative compositions that involve “looping:” live recorded layers of sound resulting in a large ensemble effect.

The evening is beinpresented in conjunction with Friesen’s “Creative Cello Workshop,” July 31 through August 3rd in which fifteen cellists from all over North America will converge in Bellows Falls for an intensive weekend of creative exercises, immersion in music technology, improvisation, and issues related to the challenges that creative and collaborative players face in contemporary music.

Special guest, acoustic double-neck guitarist Ian Ethan is turning more and more heads with his unique brand of acoustic instrumental music. One of only about five musicians worldwide to tackle the double-neck guitar in earnest and on its own terms, he fluidly combines a staggering variety of self-invented playing techniques necessitated by his multi-layered compositions, which, taken together,
establish the instrument’s musical validity perhaps more so than the work of any other artist. While audiences consistently remark on the fascinating visual aspects of watching Ian play as his hands weave between fretboards and slap, tap, knock, strum, and pluck various other parts of the instrument to life, his unusual methods are clearly no more than functionally necessary by-products of the rich, deeply heartfelt, and powerfully uplifting music that he writes and plays.

Eugene Friesen, longtime cellist with the Paul Winter Consort and faculty member at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, is also an accomplished composer, author and educator. This past year Friesen performed and taught in China, Australia and Egypt in addition to appearances in the US. In August, Friesen will be featured at the Rio International Cello Encounter in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
